AV - Sound overview

A great soundtrack really adds to the atmosphere of a movie and draws you into the story.

Unfortunately most cheap system don't work. They have sounds flying about front to rear but you can't actually make out the words, which means that it's useless.

Realistically a good systems starts at £ 1500-2000 for an amplifier and 5 speaker/subwoofer package.

If this isn't in the budget my advice is don't bother with 5.1, get a decent 2.1 system, look at the PoorTV? tab to the right of this.

Using a Denon or Marantz amp with Kef T series slim speakers gives a brilliant sound at sensible money.

The T series is so clear on speech, and yet still has a warm sound and a real kick from the 250W subwoofer.

The Denon 1912 is great value for £1500 including a Kef KHT3000 5.1 package and a pair of stands.

Best combination at the price? We will supply a package of the Marantz 5006 with the T205 at £1999.

There are several combinations that I can recommend with wall mount speakers right up to £5-6000 range, but usually the next jump up from this is to look at hifi type speakers and a better amplifier to match.

If you have space for floor standing speakers you will have a much better sound on music and movies. 

This will start from around £ 3000+ and go right up to unlimited budgets!

Keeping with Kef/Marantz you can spend £ 3200 to £ 4900, then the Linn speakers kick in. These take things up another level on music and movies, the only drawback is that you start from £ 5700.
